Thousands of fans of Crawley Town Football Club have set off in coaches from West Sussex to see their team play Manchester United in the FA Cup.

On Saturday, 26 coaches organised by the Blue Square Premier club set off from Broadfield Stadium.

In the West Sussex town, Crawley Borough Council has put up six lamp post banners along the Boulevard in support of the team.

The town hall has a large banner outside, and a Crawley Town FC flag.

Councillor Lenny Walker said the eyes of the world would be on Crawley.

He said: "We have also started discussions with the football club about a civic event or parade at the end of the season, to celebrate a fantastic year which will hopefully end with promotion to the Football League.

"Having a club in the fifth round of the world's greatest cup competition playing against Manchester United and - potentially - being a Football League club next season all help to shine a positive light on the town."

The team headed for Manchester on Thursday.

Steve Evans Crawley Town manager

Crawley Town manager Steve Evans has said he and the players will be wracked with nerves before the game.

He believes his team can pull off a shock result and has predicted a 1-0 win for Crawley.

He added: "For my players it will be a big day. It will be the same for me."

Manchester United sit four divisions above Crawley, but Evans said: "I think that we are genuinely one of the teams that could possibly get a positive result there.

"It will just be Manchester United v Crawley Town, and as far fetched as that sounds, that's what it is."

And he joked: ""We have been approaching it as normal - although we have bought some extra cling film for our goal. We hope that no-one notices when we put it up."

Crawley's mayor Lee Burke and MP Henry Smith will both be at Old Trafford for the fifth round tie.

Crawley are the first non-league team for 17 years to reach the last 16 of the FA Cup.

The club's website has goodwill messages posted on it from supporters in Australia, the US, Italy and Poland.
